As a Parent, You Notice Things
The way your child covers their mouth when they laugh. The offhand comment they made about their teeth before picture day. These small moments can carry a lot of weight. Orthodontic care for children is not just about creating a straighter smile. It’s about giving them the confidence to let that smile show up freely in every phase of life ahead.
Start The Conversation Early
Most of the parents we see assume that orthodontic treatment starts in the teenage years. But, what you may not have known is that the ideal time for your child’s first orthodontic evaluation is actually around age seven! It may sound early, but this is when your child's permanent teeth are beginning to come in alongside their baby teeth, which is the exact window Dr. Barnes needs to see how their jaw is developing and whether anything deserves attention.
Their first orthodontic visit won’t be a commitment to braces. It’ll simply be a conversation, and an opportunity for Dr. Barnes to take a careful look at your child's teeth and jaw, explain what she sees, and give you a clear picture of what the future holds (even if what comes next is nothing at all.)
Exactly What Happens at That First Visit
With the dentist often comes nerves, and it’s no different for children. If your kid arrives a little nervous, that’s okay, we plan for it. Dr. Barnes will take her time to get to know your child, and not just about what’s happening in their mouth.
As she conducts her examination, she will explain to them, and to you, what she’s looking for and answer any questions either of you may have. This helps the whole visit feel more like a check-in rather than a procedure.
We make use of high-definition digital scans instead of old-fashioned impression trays, which means that there’s no goop, no gagging, and a whole lot less anxiety. Your child will even be able to see their teeth on the screen (which has amazed many little ones), turning nervousness into genuine curiosity.
By the end of the visit, you will walk away with one of three outcomes:
- A clear plan to begin treatment
- A schedule to monitor your child's growth over time
- The reassurance that everything looks great and no action is needed right now.
Whatever the answer is, you will know it, and you will understand why.
When Early Treatment Can Make a Difference
If Dr. Barnes does recommend getting started with early orthodontic treatment, doing so can actually make their journey simpler, shorter, and more effective.
- Guiding the Jaw Early: While your child's jaw is still developing, we can often correct the course with a simple appliance, which could prevent more involved treatment later.
- Protecting Permanent Teeth: Crowded or misaligned teeth often wear against each other and are harder to keep clean. Getting ahead of their care now can set your child up for a healthier foundation.
- Building Confidence at the Right Age: The earlier your child feels at home in their smile, the more that confidence becomes simply part of who they are.
We Design Treatments for Growing Kids
Yes, your child’s path will be different from the next, which is why we never recommend more than what your child actually needs.
Early Interceptive Treatment
For younger children, using targeted early treatment can guide their jaw growth and create more space for permanent teeth before crowding becomes a problem. This is usually simpler than parents expect, and the results can dramatically reduce what’s needed down the line.
Traditional Metal Braces
Reliable, effective, and (if your kid has any say) an excuse to pick a new color at every appointment. Metal braces remain one of the best ways to address a full range of bite and alignment issues, and most children take to them with far more confidence than parents anticipate.
Clear Braces
For older children and soon-to-be teens who want a lower-profile option, we also offer ceramic braces, which offer the same consistent results with a more subtle look. They’re able to blend with the natural tooth color while handling the full range of corrections your child needs.
You Don’t Need It All Figured Out Now
If you suspect something and wonder whether now is the right time to come in, that’s enough of a reason to call. We’ll walk you through everything, answer every question, and make sure both you and your child leave feeling informed, not pressured.
